Athletic falls to Real Madrid and takes a step back in the fight for Europe

The rojiblanco team lost 3-0 at the Santiago Bernabéu. Karim Benzema has scored the three goals of the match.

Athletic Club fell defeated by Ral Madrid (3-0) at the Santiago Bernabéu and took a step back in the fight to enter the European positions. The rojiblanco team endured well in the first half and was overtaken by the rival in the second half.

In the first part penalties the locals approached once with danger, the quarter of an hour and after a good triangulation on the left side of Marco Asensio with Lucas Vázquez and with Marcelo Vieira. The Brazilian side finished the play with a strong shot over the crossbar, without bothering a Iago Herrerín who had no more work in the goal until the second half. Before the intermission, a header from Raúl García to the center of Beñat Etxebarria was the highlight on the Bilbao side. Well stopped that ball by Keylor Navas at ground level, both teams signed tables and entrusted their luck to a second time of resurrection, where he appeared again as savior Karim Benzema for the umpteenth time this season.

Benzema opened the account at the Santiago Bernabéu stadium (1-0) just back from the locker room, thanks to a header almost in the small area and making a good Asensio center, with the left foot, having easily unmarked the Iñigo Lekue’s back. There lived one of the main strengths of the white team, with the ’20’ changing bands often to mislead their markers while Luka Modric handled the ball and Toni Kroos covered many spaces, along with Carlos Casemiro and taking advantage of the little bit of his rival.

It was Athletic’s turn to move and his coach introduced Unai López and Aritz Aduriz in the 75th minute, but Benzema immediately emerged again to score 2-0 and clear any reaction time. In a corner, kicked with precision by Modric, the French striker rose above Yeray Alvarez and put the ball, again with a header, at the bottom of the meshes.

Herrerín had failed at the start, as a sign of the lack of tension and expertise that the team ‘lion’ had on the lawn of the Bernabéu. His little baggage of approaches to the goal of Navas was extended in the minute 87, following a header by Iñaki Williams after assistance from Unai López. The Costa Rican goalkeeper repelled the ball with his foot and then Gareth Bale was able to establish the third, although his vaseline over Herrerín went very high. The Welsh player did not silence the whistles against him, and constants at home. At least gave the pass to Benzema so that he closed his great afternoon with another goal (3-0), from far and empty door after another ominous departure of Herrerín.
